Routine Dental Care Basics with Children

Hearing the phrase “Monkey see, monkey do,” parents hope that children will pick up the more healthy habits and mimic those, instead of picking up the unhealthy ones. When it comes to brushing teeth and flossing, children may not be so easy to persuade or convince. Fortunately, parents can learn how to teach their children healthy dental hygiene techniques without the need to enforce the rules each night.

Covering the basics

With dental care in children, it is important to start early. More than that, it is important to help instill positive experiences with dental hygiene and dental visits. Kidshealth.org explains that “Even before your baby starts teething, run a clean, damp washcloth over the gums to clear away harmful bacteria.”

Although this can seem early, it will help keep the gums and mouth clean for when the baby teeth begin to grow in. Once the teeth begin to grow in, “brush them with an infant toothbrush.” As much as parents do not want to feel they need to enforce rules, kidshealth.org recommends that parents “Always supervise kids younger than 6 while brushing, as they are more likely to swallow toothpaste.”

One way to help make this feel like more positive of an experience is to brush with the child. By brushing together, the child will realize that the action of brushing teeth is not some form of punishment and the parent will not have to enforce proper dental hygiene as much.

It’s not as bad as a child might think

The dentist and dental work can seem more frightening than it actually is. When an adult considers the dangerous diseases that are a result of poor dental care, the dentist is a necessity. However, a child cannot always reach that conclusion. A method to help the child feel more comfortable at a dentist involves taking the child to the dentist on an earlier date before the appointment.

Ask the dental office if the child can visit and meet some of the staff to feel more comfortable with visiting the dentist. By going to a family dentist, the parent can schedule an appointment on the same day as a child. This will help save time and allow for one trip instead of multiple trips.

The Mayo Clinic reminds patients that in order “To prevent gum disease and other oral health problems, schedule regular dental cleanings and exams.” The dentist will be able to help the child’s teeth grow in properly and prevent any other oral health issues. The parent needs to help instill those positive traits at an early age through healthy methods.

By helping the child grow up with a positive view of dental treatment and hygiene, the parent can help to ensure healthy teeth for years to come. For more tips and to schedule an appointment, do not hesitate to call.
