Most people seem to have negative memories of dental visits, associating the pain with a dental cleaning. While a dental cleaning may result in some pain, it does not have to be painful at all. In fact, with proper dental hygiene at home, a dental in-office dental cleaning can go fairly quickly. For the patients experiencing gum disease or infection, however, the cleaning may take longer than one might hope.

In the early stages, gum disease is preventable and mouthhealthy.org recommends to “See your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better.” The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, which, “is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily brushing and flossing,” mouthhealthy.org adds.
By taking care of one’s teeth, one can continue to prevent gingivitis and the later stages of gum disease. Regular dental checkups will help to catch the early signs of the disease. This does not mean the patient needs to visit the dentist every week or so, but will benefit from visiting once every six months.
When scaling becomes necessary
In the fight against gum disease and other dental infections, a patient who slacks off on personal dental hygiene may require more extensive treatments at the dentist. For the cases in which gum disease has spread and is in a bad state, a dental scaling may become necessary. Dental scaling is a part of a deep cleaning process and involves more than a typical dental visit.
“Scaling is when your dentist removes all the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) above and below the gumline, making sure to clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket,” mouthhealthy.org describes. Scaling is a necessary part of the treatment since it will collect all of the plaque that worsens the condition of gum disease.
While scaling can cause mild discomfort a day or two after the procedure, the pain will go away and leave a healthy mouth in the patient. By going through a dental scaling and deep cleaning process, the patient will ensure a healthy gum disease-free mouth.
