Proper Brushing For Plaque Removal
As everyone who brushes and flosses their teeth knows, your back teeth are harder to reach and to keep clean than your front teeth. The back teeth are designed with grooves and ridges that help you to chew food, but the down side is that these grooves and ridges can also collect tiny food particles, which can increase the risk of cavities and bacteria in plaque, which in turn can lead to gum disease.
Tooth decay doesn't happen overnight. But if you allow plaque to build up on teeth by not flossing properly over many years, the bacteria and acids that they produce will break down the tooth enamel. If plaque goes unremoved, tooth decay can progress inward and affect the nerves in the pulp of the tooth. This progressive decay can cause symptoms including pain and swelling, and may result in tooth loss in extreme cases.
Bacteria can convert fermenting carbohydrates (which are sugars and are found in cooked starchy foods) into plaque within 20 minutes. Be sure to clean around the back teeth with your toothbrush and dental floss every day.

May 9, 2012 at 2:19 pm A fun way to reduce your risk of tooth decay (when you don’t have your toothbrush handy)?
Chew sugarless gum that has the ADA Seal. Chewing gum for 20 minutes after meals has been shown to reduce tooth decay. It does this because increased saliva flow helps wash out food and neutralize acid.
Look for gum with the ADA Seal of acceptance such as:
Dentyne Ice Sugarless gum, Stride Sugarless gum, Trident Sugarfree gum, Wrigley’s Extra Sugarfree gum and Wrigley’s Orbit Sugarfree gum.

Fact. Acidic foods such as lemons, citrus juices, or soft drinks don't cause cavities , but they may be putting your enamel in danger.
"Acids can cause erosion of the tooth-protecting enamel," says Harms, "weakening the tooth. If you lose the enamel's protection and expose the underlying dentin, your tooth is now more prone to decay."

YIELD: 11 cups
COOK TIME:1 Hour, 5 Minutes
PREP TIME:15 Minutes
COURSE: Soups/Stews
Ingredients
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
3 leeks, sliced
3 large baking potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices
3 (14 1/2-ounce) cans chicken broth
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Toppings: shredded Cheddar cheese, crumbled cooked bacon, chopped fresh chives
Preparation
Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat; stir in onion and leek. Cover and cook 20 minutes. Stir in potato; cover and cook 15 minutes. Stir in broth, salt, and pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes or until potato is tender. Remove from heat, and cool slightly.
Process soup in batches in a blender until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides; return to saucepan, and cook over medium heat until thoroughly heated. Serve with desired toppings.

Actually its both myth and fact! When you eat anything with carbs, the bacteria become active and produce acid that then eats into your tooth.
"Once they do that, the bacteria now have a nice little hole to live in where your toothbrush can floss can't reach," Harms says. The bacteria continue to metabolize carbs, produce acids, and your cavity just keeps getting bigger. Also, it's not the amount of carbohydrates you eat that causes tooth decay, but the length of time your teeth are exposed. If you eat a lot of carbs for lunch, that is one big exposure. But if you spend the day - sipping - sugary drinks, that's continuous exposure - and much more dangerous for your teeth.
